Mineral wool heat insulation

Mineral wool heat insulation

Wall insulation using mineral wool resembles foam insulation in appearance and installation procedure, but has a few distinctive features. For example, mineral wool insulation of walls is done by means of special adhesive that can’t be used in case of foam insulation. A foam adhesive, therefore, is not suitable for mineral wool.

Mineral wool with its properties is absolutely not inferior to foam, but, on the contrary, surpasses it. Thermal conductivity of mineral wool is higher than of foam. Moreover, this material is incombustible, does not emit any toxic gases, and simply melts at high temperatures. Mineral wool is two times more durable than foam. The building that is insulated with mineral wool will “breathe”, since the material is breathable. Thus, it is a perfect idea to insulate your Russian bath with mineral wool. Of course, wall insulation using mineral wool costs more than foam insulation, but the difference in price is not too big.
It is known that about 25% of the heat in a house is lost through the ceiling. Therefore, if the room is high enough, the best solution will be to install mineral wool between the drywall and the board in the ceiling. Ceiling insulation using mineral wool is now the most common method of isolation.
However, the best option is mineral wool insulation of both walls and ceiling. Drywall is fixed to the wall structure inside the room, and the empty space between it and the wall is filled with mineral wool. It is so called “thermos effect”. Since mineral wool is breathable, there will be no excessive moisture in the house, and, therefore, no moud and fungus on the walls and ceiling.
The most common products of mineral wool are boards and mats. Mineral wool is installed on previously prepared base that should be clean, dry and have no oil or paint stains. Then the base is clearcoled. The surface must be flat to glue mineral wool boards in the right way.
Special adhesive for mineral wool is put on the ceiling or wall. Board is pressed against the wall and fixed with special dowels. The length of dowels depends on the thickness of the board. It should be completely hidden in the mineral wool so that it won’t hinder in the process of further installation.
